FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS COACHING?
-Coaching is a process of working with a qualified individual to achieve optimal results and your maximum potential. Just like the most successful athletes work with a variety of coaches to prepare for peak performance you can work with a professional to identify and accomplish goals in your life.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COACHING AND THERAPY?
-Coaching and therapy have many commonalities and often work towards similar aims: to help the client achieve their goals. In my experience the difference lies in the method of helping the client and the type of goals that are the focus of the work. A therapist can help identify patterns of behavior that may be holding a client back in their lives and help them clarify and set goals for their future. A responsible coach will typically leave the delicate psychological work to a professional trained in those areas and instead help the client stay focused on their current situation, what they would like to accomplish in the future, and most importantly partner with the client to identify the actions required to attain those goals.
ARE YOU A SOBRIETY/RECOVERY COACH?
-No, I am an addict/alcoholic in recovery who is also a Certified Professional Coach. My work as a coach is to help other people who are also in recovery identify their goals and take the actions necessary to create an exciting and fulfilling life in sobriety.
WHERE DID YOU RECEIVE YOUR COACH TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION?
-I received my certification as a Professional Coach from iPEC (Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching) in the fall of 2019. The iPEC Coaching Training Program is an ICF (International Coaching Federation) accredited training program.
DO YOU ONLY WORK WITH RECOVERING ADDICTS AND ALCOHOLICS?
-No, I work with anyone who is in recovery from any addictive or compulsive behavior; including codependency, eating disorders, gambling addiction, debt, and many others.
DO YOU ONLY WORK WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE ALREADY IN RECOVERY?
-Yes, in order to help my clients achieve their optimal results I have found that it is best if clients are already working a program of recovery when seeking my services as a coach. I do not require a new client to have any specific amount of time in recovery, but since the work I do as a coach is separate from the work a client does in their program of recovery it is important to have a support structure in place.
ARE YOU A THERAPIST, SOCIAL WORKER, OR AN ADDICTION COUNSELOR?
-No, I am not. I have no clinical psychological or substance abuse training.
WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS FOR WORKING WITH CLIENTS?
-I begin all my client relationships with an introductory call. The purpose of this call is to discuss a potential clients circumstances, their goals, and why they are considering coaching. These calls also give a potential client an opportunity to ask any questions they have about the work that I do, get a feel for me as a coach. The calls usually last about 15 minutes and if we both get a sense that we are a good fit to work together we would schedule a complimentary 1 hour coaching session.
